Notion Basics: Understanding Pages, Databases, and Blocks

You’ve clicked around, watched a tutorial or two, made a few things, and it still hasn’t quite clicked. You can build stuff, but you don’t really understand what you’re building, why is this a page and that a database, what exactly is a block, and how do they fit together? So you copy templates you can’t modify and make things that half-work, because nobody ever actually taught you the basic pieces the whole tool is built from.

Here’s what makes everything else make sense: Notion is built from just three things, blocks, pages, and databases. Understanding these three Notion basics, what each one is and how they nest together, is the entire difference between poking at features and actually knowing how the tool works. Learn the three building blocks, and Notion stops being a confusing pile of options and becomes obvious. It really is all you need to grasp first, and it takes about ten minutes.

Why Notion confuses beginners

Most tools tell you what they are. A word processor is for documents, a spreadsheet for grids, and you know what you’re looking at the moment you open them. Notion doesn’t announce itself that way, because it’s a set of building blocks you assemble into whatever you want, and that flexibility is exactly what makes it baffling at first. You’re handed raw materials with no obvious shape, and without knowing what the materials are, every choice feels like a guess.

That’s why beginners copy templates they can’t change and build things that quietly don’t work, they’re operating a tool whose fundamental structure they were never shown. It isn’t a failure of intelligence; it’s a missing foundation, and it’s the reason most people use Notion at a fraction of its worth and leave real value on the table. It’s also a small gap to close, because underneath all the features, there are only three concepts, and once you see them, the whole thing reorganizes itself in your mind. Everything you’ll ever build in Notion is some arrangement of these three pieces.

Blocks: the pieces everything is made of

A block is the smallest unit in Notion, and the key fact is that everything is one. A line of text is a block. A heading is a block. An image, a to-do item, a bullet, a quote, a table, each is a block. When you type in Notion, you’re creating blocks, and you can grab any block, drag it somewhere else, or turn it into a different type entirely, a paragraph into a heading, a bullet into a to-do.

Think of blocks as LEGO bricks. On their own they’re small and simple, but everything in Notion is made of them, and because they all snap together and rearrange freely, you can build almost anything. Once you see that every single thing on the screen is just a block, Notion’s flexibility stops feeling chaotic and starts feeling like what it is: pieces you arrange.

Pages: containers for blocks

A page is a container that holds blocks. It’s the closest thing to a document, a space where your blocks live, stacked in order. Every page you make is really just a collection of blocks, and this article, if it were in Notion, would be one page made of heading blocks and paragraph blocks.

The part that trips people up is that pages nest: a page can contain other pages. This is how folder-like structure happens in Notion, not through actual folders, but through pages inside pages. That’s useful in small doses and a trap in large ones, but for now the point is simple: a page is a container of blocks, and it can hold other pages too. That’s the whole of it.

Databases: collections of pages you can structure

A database is where Notion’s real power lives, and it’s simpler than it sounds once you see what it actually is: a collection of pages that all share the same properties. Every row in a database is itself a page, you can open it, and inside it’s made of blocks like any other, but the database adds structured fields to every entry, a status, a date, an owner, so you can sort, filter, group, and view the whole collection in different ways.

This is the piece that separates Notion from a document tool, and it’s worth understanding properly. Here’s the insight that ties all three concepts together: every database entry is a page, and every page is made of blocks. They’re not three separate features, they’re three layers. Blocks build pages; a database is a collection of pages with shared properties. Once that clicks, you look at anything in Notion and immediately understand what you’re seeing.

Here’s what the click feels like. A construction business owner found Notion completely baffling, he’d make pages, poke at tables, copy a template, and never understood any of it, so he nearly gave up. Then someone explained the three building blocks in ten minutes: everything’s a block, pages hold blocks, databases are collections of pages. Suddenly it all made sense, and he built himself a simple job tracker that afternoon, not because he’d learned a hundred features, but because he finally understood the three the whole tool is made from.

What understanding the basics won't do

Knowing the three building blocks makes Notion comprehensible; it doesn’t make you an expert overnight. There’s more to learn, views, relations, formulas, and the design principles that separate a good workspace from a messy one, and that comes with time and practice. The basics are the foundation, essential and quick to lay, but they’re the start of the journey, not the end of it.

They also tell you what the pieces are, not how to build well with them. Understanding a database is different from knowing how many databases to make or how to connect them, that’s design, and it’s the next thing to learn once the basics are solid. So don’t expect to grasp the three concepts and suddenly build perfect systems; expect to grasp them and suddenly understand what you’re doing, which is the thing that was missing.

And don’t over-study, either. The basics take minutes, not weeks, and the fastest way to truly get them is to stop reading and start building. Notion keeps adding features, AI, automations, and more, but every one of them still rests on blocks, pages, and databases, so the foundation never changes no matter how much gets added on top. Learn the three, and you’re never lost again.

Where to start: make one of each

Don’t just read about it, make one of each, because ten minutes of doing will teach you what no explanation can. Make a page. Type some text, congratulations, those are blocks. Then turn part of it into a database by adding a table, put a couple of entries in, and give them a property or two.

Now open one of those database entries. Notice that it’s a page, with its own space made of blocks. That single moment, watching a database row open into a page, is where the whole structure clicks into place, blocks inside pages inside databases, and once you’ve felt it, you’ll never look at a Notion screen and feel lost about what you’re seeing again.
